Manager Boot Camp

Purpose of Boot Camp

  • Accelerate learning & integration of TPS thinking way for leadership and management
  • Increased pace of management understanding & support for kaizen activities
  • Focus is learning by doing: “get your hands dirty”…intensive shop floor focus
  • Participants are managers (or above) or high po’s
  • Target area (s) is based on business need…focus on the biggest problems!

Structure of Boot Camp

  • 5 Phases of Boot Camp:
    1. Phase 0:  Create The Need
    2. Phase 1:  Standardized Work
    3. Phase 2:  Problem Solving
    4. Phase 3:  JIT Implementation
    5. Phase 4:  Shop Floor Management
    6. Phase 5:  Business Management & Leadership Development

(Note:  This phase is two, 4-day workshops; 8 days total)

  • 5 Boot Camp participants per cohort
  • “Active Week” (4 days): (TPS consultant present)

Participants spend 90% of their time in boot camp (1 hour break each day for phone calls, emails, etc.)

Normal duties are delegated and/or covered by their manager(s)

  • “Homework Weeks” (3-5 weeks):

Participants spend approx. 4-6 hrs./week on follow-up and teaching activities

Shop Floor Leadership Boot Camp

Purpose of Shop Floor Leadership Boot Camp

Intensive introduction to two aspects of TPS:

  • Basic Technical understanding:
    • Job Analysis
    • Standardized Work
    • Problem Solving
    • Technical aspects of Shop Floor Management (focus on problem solving tools)
    • Leader Standardized Work
  • Practice concepts in classroom and implement on shop floor with One-On-One coaching support:
    • Job Relations
    • Shop Floor Management

Summary of Shop Floor Leadership Boot Camp

Day 1:

  • Work Breakdown (“X & O” factory)
    • Observe, stop watch training, Standardized Work (Work Chart and Job Analysis)
    • Observe and solve problems (kaizen)
  • Job Relations
    • Role playing & practice
  • Shop Floor Management
    • Problem Solving
    • Standardized Work Support
    • Escalation
  • Work assignment for Day 2

Day 2:

  • Introduction to people in area and purpose of day
    • Encourage questions or concerns
  • Throughout day perform Team Leader role, focusing on:
    • Detecting abnormalities
    • Supporting standardized work
    • Recovery
    • Escalation
    • Problem solving
    • Utilize andon, production tracking board
  • End of Shift:
    • End of shift status, main problems/achievements
    • Main learning points
    • Work assignments for Day 3

Day 3:

  • Qtr 1 – 2: Continued Team Leader role, focusing on:
    • Detecting abnormalities
    • Supporting standardized work
    • Recovery
    • Escalation
    • Problem solving
      • Utilize andon, production tracking board
    • End of “Shift”:
      • End of shift status, main problems/achievements
      • Main learning points
  • Qtr 3:  Prepare for Report Out
  • Qtr 4: Final report to management
